Our U15's finish Runners-up in Swim England National Age Group finals....

Stephen Chambers17 Nov - 07:48

What a weekend for our U15's who finished runners-up to Manchester...

Our U15's set-off early on Saturday morning to travel up to Manchester Aquatics centre for this season's Swim England National Age Group's.

Sixteen teams had entered the competition this year, split into groups of Four and Watford were in Grp C alongside Scottish side Caledonia, Devon based side Newton Abbot & closer to home Barnet.

Our first game of the weekend started at 12.20pm against Newton Abbot, with the group games only two halves of eight minutes it was vital we got off to a good start however it was Newton Abbot that draw first blood as they scored first.

However that kicked our team into action as first David Guzijan equalised before another goal from David put as in front at 2-1. A double from Josh De Almeida and goals from Noah Green & Keanan Galian had the team 6-1 in front at half-time.

Into the second half and Watford soon establish a 10-1 lead with a double from Ronan Rodrigo, and strikes from Xander Ray & Noah O'Sullivan. Two late goals from Newton Abbot finished the game with a 10-3 margin for Watford.

A good start to our quest to finish top of group C.

Our next game at 3.00pm was against local side Barnet and in a one sided opening half the team raced into a 12-0 lead the highlight of the first half was a hat-trick from Xander and doubles from Noah O'Sullivan & Josh.

The second half saw coach Adam controlled the game and used his bench as the team scored a further three goals to end the game 15-1.

Our final game of the group was against Scottish side Caledonia who had won both their group games and therefore this was a winner takes all encounter as the winners would open up a path to the semi-finals.

Watford took an early 2-0 lead before Caledonia replied but goals from David & Noah put Watford in front 4-1 another goal from Caley for 4-2 but a four goal burst late in the half had Watford in commend at 8-2.

In the the second half and four more goals from Luka Guzijan & brother David had the team at 12-2.

The final score finished at 13-4 and Watford would top Group C and now play Group D winners Exeter in the semi-finals on Sunday morning.

Sunday's games would revert to four quarters of 5 mins actual play which made for a more even contest.

The opening quarter of the Semi-Final was very even as Watford took the lead via David only for Exeter to pull level at 1-1. Luka then re-established our lead at 2-1 but a penalty conceded with nine seconds of the first quarter remaining allowed Exeter to level again for 2-2.

Into the second quarter and mid-way through the period Exeter took a two goal lead for 2-4 before goals from Twin brothers Luka & David Guzijan had the team level again at 4-4. With 95 seconds of the half remaining Exeter edged 5-4 in front but another David goal 35 seconds remaining once again had the sides level at 5-5.

Into the third period and the game was see-sawing between the sides as Exeter crept in front before another David goal moved the score onto 6-6. Exeter then moved 7-6 in front but once again it was David to the rescue as he level the game at 7-7.

Into a the final period which was going to be a nervy 5 minutes.

Early in the final period goals from Noah & Xander had Watford 9-7 up but a double from Exeter's S White restored parity at 9-9 with 1.44 of the game remaining.

When the next Watford attack broke down Exeter called time-out with 1.14 remaining.

But Watford defended the Exeter attack and turning defence into attack Watford went forward and scored what turned out to be the winner via Noah Green for 10-9 and reach the NAG's Finals.

All our supporters were exhausted watching the final few minutes but it was worth it.

Now the final and we would play local side City of Manchester who had reach the finals by winning Group A and beating West London Penguin in the semi-finals.

Manchester's defence was superb in the final and maybe the semi-final exertions against Exeter had taken it's toll on the Watford Boys as Manchester took the final 10-2.

Overall it was a brilliant achievement by our Boys & Head Coach Adam Page to reach the finals having won four previous games and the team gave everything in the final but it wasn't to be.
