The majority of the team have in the last two weeks travelled to Winchester, Sarajevo, Hamersmith, Chelmsford and today the Saxons marched on Sunny Sanford Lido to battle Cheltenham Spartans. With a flurry of away games and with trips to Chelmsford and Guildford to come, we eagerly await a barrage of home fixtures in the coming months! The travelling twelve today comprised of nine teenagers bolstered by the experienced International trio of Veli, Stefano and Adam.
On with the action: The water was cold and so was the Saxons start and we found ourselves on the wrong end of a 5-0 deficit inside three minutes. The team now began to settle into a rhythm and three well worked goals towards the end of the quarter seemed to breathe life into our team only to concede a late goal and after the opening quarter Saxons trailed 6-3.
A battling second quarter with better all round team play from the Saxons and both teams taking their chances the game was evenly poised at 10-9 with seconds remaining. Unfortunately old habits die hard and we conceded with 19 seconds remaining (11-9).
A crowd pleasing goal inside 20 seconds of Q3 from Veli the Bulgarian bazooka made it a one goal game again. Unfortunately the scoreline became somewhat one sided from there on in. The Spartans'experienced GB double act of Banwell & Parker took the game by the scruff of its neck scoring nine in the last two quarters for a combined game tally of 15!
I want to say a big thank you to all the parents/chauffeurs for getting a bunch of teenagers and Adam Page out of bed and on the road before 7am on a Sunday!
